  • Find Your Ideal Customer: Do This Before You Create Another Social Media Post

    Guest Post by Sarah Taylor

Tell me if this sounds familiar….

You put a lot of time into a social media post, trying to make it perfect and on trend, whatever that means this week. You post it, hoping for big results, but then you hear crickets. And you tell yourself social media marketing is a waste of time for a shop like yours.

    Been there, done that.

Here’s what a lot of marketing experts are going to tell you. Just post more and keep pushing out content, because the more you talk, the more they’ll listen.

Nope. That’s not it. And it’s also a one-way ticket to burnout, especially when you’re already running a shop, managing inventory, and wearing all the hats.

Here’s what most marketing coaches skip right over. Not everyone wants what you sell. That might be hard to hear, but it’s actually one of the best things you can learn as a product seller because it is going to make marketing so much easier.

You can post 10 times a day on every single social media platform, but if it’s not landing with your ideal customer, it’s a complete waste of your time that you don’t have to spare.

Before you type out one caption, before you even open that social media app, there is something you need to do that so many product sellers and shop owners overlook. You need to know your ideal customer inside and out.

And before you say, “Well, everyone is my customer,” go back and reread what I just said. Not everyone wants what you have to sell, and that’s actually a really good thing, I promise!

What you want to have in your business is an Ideal Customer Avatar, ICA for short. This is the person who loves what you sell, your brand, your messaging, all of it. Even big brands like Walmart and Target build their entire marketing strategies around their ICA, so I know it will work for you too.

The easiest way to find your ICA is to keep it simple. Grab a piece of paper and a pen, and start with what you sell. Think about your products and who they are truly meant for, the person who you see in your shop or chat with online. Think about past customers and the feedback they have given you, or the reviews they have left. Really pay attention to what they say about how they are going to use your product, how it makes them feel to buy it, and what they love about it and your business.

To make this easier, think about your favorite store, online or in person. Really think about what that experience feels like and what keeps you coming back. Now think about a store you never shop in, and why that is. Chances are, whatever they sell just doesn’t appeal to you, and that means you are not their ideal customer. But that favorite store of yours? They know what makes you tick, and they use that in their marketing. You were drawn in without even realizing it.

That’s exactly what we’re working toward, and here’s where it starts to get really fun.

Once you have your ideal customer written down and you’re dialed in on who they are, grab that piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On one side, write down every problem, desire, want, and need your ideal customer has. Something as simple as hunger or wanting their kitchen to smell good counts, so don’t overthink this. On the other side, write down every solution your products offer to those problems. Extra points if you write down the one thing you know you do better than anyone else.

Really taking the time to do this exercise, and continue to add to it throughout the year, will not only help you really get to know your customer, but you will NEVER have to wonder what to post again.

When you dive deep into who you help, how you help them, and what their benefit is, you will never stare at a blank screen again, wondering what to post. And if you repeat it for each quarter and the products tied to it, like holidays, you will be a content machine.

And here’s the part I really want you to hear: Your content does not have to look like everyone else’s to work. You don’t need the trending audio, or dancing around to a song, or worry about the perfect hooks. A lot of the advice flooding your social media feed right now was built for service providers and online coaches, and it just does not translate to a shop selling physical products. And, when they’re all chasing the same trends and tricks, their content all starts looking the same, which is the exact opposite of what we actually want.

Grabbing your phone and knowing exactly what to post, and watching it actually pull people into your shop or onto your website, is what can happen when you take the time to dive deep into your ICA and what they want and need.

Social media marketing isn’t about learning more trends or tricks. It’s about getting back to basics and understanding that what your customer wants to hear always comes before what you want to say. The retailers making the biggest sales aren’t the ones posting the most, they’re the ones who know exactly who they’re talking to before they ever hit post.

If you are ready to stop guessing and start posting with purpose, come hang out with me in The Business Balance, my free Facebook group where we talk about marketing and mindset for product-based business owners every single week.

  • Sell Your Products with a Facebook Group

    Guest Post by Lyndsi Weise

15 years ago I was just laid off from a corporate job after graduating college and thinking climbing the corporate ladder was the way to build a life of flexibility and have a great career.

I received a wild cold DM on Facebook and while I thought it was a robot, I chose to follow her and the one thing she did RIGHT was consistently post her story and her vision with her business…. That led me to trusting her and eventually I joined her business.

But I knew sending cold DM’s the way she did, was not the route to build something big and sustainable.

I sold wellness products for 13 years and made multiple six figures every year. I then went on to teach this system I created to other social sellers, coaches, realtors and digital product creators.

Instead of cold DM’s I opted to build a community – inside of a facebook group.

The thing that is so nice about Facebook Groups is they are searchable and set up for you to have sustainable success.  This includes attracting NEW leads, the RIGHT leads into your world and converting them to customers.

I went on to make sales every single week. I built my team and the best part was they could do the same I was doing. It was a super simple process to follow.

The first thing you want to do is make sure you have a group with a searchable name, be specific and make sure the description is set up. The cover photo is what they will see first as well.

Second, what you want to do is tell people about your community. There are many ways to grow your community which we dive deeper into when you come into my world, but the most important thing is that you are telling people about it.

Once your community is up and running, and starting to grow the next step is to build trust with these new members. They are colder leads at this point, so they are interested in what you are offering but they are not ‘sold’ yet. And we all know nobody likes to be sold to, so your goal is to build trust through conversations and your content inside the community. FB Lives are another great way to build up trust quickly with these people coming into your world. I’d recommend going live 1-2X a week or more if you want.

The engagement is not something I heavily focus on because people are busy and don’t always have time to engage, but they are watching you. They are lurking. So, don’t stop showing up. The lurkers are the ones who buy!

The deals are always done in the DM’s. Every once in a while you will have someone see a post and decide to buy from you but typically this is going to happen with a conversation as they get to know you. A few simple things to do is welcome them into your community, get their email so you are growing your list on the back end and ask them a specific question based on what you sell… For example if it’s a health product – You would ask ‘Are you new to your health journey or have you been on it for a while?’  From there you can learn about their desires and determine if your product is the right fit for them.

I want to leave you today with an important note to make sure that you are CLEAR on what you are offering, who it’s for and what it can do for that person. When this part is CLEAR the rest is simple to implement.

The best part of this is as you grow the community, they see your content everyday. 60% of people SEE the content in the group vs 3% who see IG content.

1.8 Billion people are actively using Facebook Groups DAILY and of that 1.2 make purchases from the group.   That is like the size of the country France, so do not sleep on creating a group and building it out as a community!

If you’d like to dive deeper on this and learn more – I am offering 1:1 Strategy Sessions for 90 min, we will map out your community and make sure it’s searchable for the right leads to come in. We will set it up together and make sure your email list is growing.

I will help you get 100 of the RIGHT leads into your group in 30 days.

You get my custom guide, a 1:1 call and week of voxer to ensure you are implementing and for any questions you have. You can sign up here.

  • Three Ways to Get Your Products in Front of New Potential Customers this February

February can feel like a weird month for product basd businesses, because that holiday rush is over and January was super quiet and you might have no idea what February is going to be like.  You might also find yourself wondering how you can get more people seeing your products so that they will actually buy.

To support you, in this blog post I’m sharing three easy ways to get more eyeballs on your products in February and beyond.

Even just implementing just one of these strategies will help you keep your products in front of the right people and build steady awareness that supports sales now and later.

    1. Create one piece of content that you can repurpose multiple ways!

Instead of chasing algorithm trends, make something your customers or affiliates want to repost.

    Examples:

    • “Things people don’t realize they need until they have this”
    • “My go-to product this month (and why)”
    • A simple photo + one honest sentence about the product

    Then:

    • Send that piece of content to your affiliates and ask them to share it with their audiences (and remind them to share it with their affiliate link to earn a little extra cash)
    • Share it in your stories so more of your IG followers see it and also share it as a post in your feed
    • Send it as an email to your community – February is when people start paying attention again after January’s reset energy, so now is a great time to get back in a regular rhythm of sending a weekly email.

    One good piece of content → shared multiple ways = more visibility and reach without adding tons more to your plate.  {And if you need help with this, you might find this helpful.}

    2. Partner With Affiliates for Valentine’s Week

February is a relationship-driven buying month, which makes it perfect for affiliate partnerships.

Instead of trying to post more yourself, let other people talk about your products for you.

    Ideas:

    • If you already have an affiliate program set up, ask 5–10 affiliates to share your product in their IG Stories or email list during Valentine’s week
    • Give them a simple angle: “A gift I’d actually want” or “Something I’m loving this month”
    • Pair it with a small incentive: bump up their commission for that week only or offer a limited-time bonus or freebie if they agree to promote during the week.

If you have 10 affiliates who share your products to their IG stories, and they each get 100 views, that’s 1000 new eyeballs checking out products.

Haven’t started your affiliate program yet? Use February to get your affiliate program set up – I’d love to help you with this!

    3. Book a spot inside the Product Seller Spotlight

As I’m prepping for the 2026 Product Seller Summit, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to make Summit week more than just learning.  I want it to be a week where product sellers are actively discovered and supported.

So during Summit week, I’ll be sending two emails featuring our Product Seller Spotlight. 🌟

I’ll be featuring 20 product sellers total, split across two spotlight emails (10 sellers per email) sent during Summit week to our 2000+ attendees.

What your Product Seller Spotlight includes:

    – A feature in one of two Summit-week spotlight emails

    – Visibility to 2,000+ Product Seller Summit attendees

    – A Facebook group post

    – A social media feature

Plus… there’s a bonus!   Everyone who signs up for a Product Seller Spotlight will receive a FREE VIP Ticket to the 2026 Product Seller Summit (value $27) when doors open at the end of March.

There are only 20 spots available, and once they’re filled, that’s it for this round.

Claim your Product Seller Spotlight here.

Important: This Spotlight is only for physical product sellers only.

Once you sign up, you’ll receive an email with a short intake form to fill out that is due by March 15, 2026.  Easy-peasy!

  • Spice Up Your Thank You Pages 🥳 (and Boost Your Sales!)

Let’s talk about your thank you pages.

I’ve been working the past few weeks on my upcoming 5 Days of Deals Black Friday Sale (it begins November 25th – I’ll share a sneak peek next week!).

One of the things I have been creating are thank you pages once someone purchases to let them know their order is complete.  Typically mine are pretty basic pages where I say thank you and direct them to check their inbox for their download.

However, I’ve decided to spice things up this year and freshen up my thank you pages, so I’ve been doing some research on different types of thank you pages because these thank you pages are a great opportunity to keep customers engaged and even encourage further actions.

Here are are 8 effective strategies I’ve recently learned about for making the most of your thank you pages (these ideas work great for both physical and digital product sellers):

    1. Encourage Social Sharing

Add social sharing buttons so your customers can share their purchase on Instagram or Facebook.

Tip: Provide pre-written, shareable posts or images, especially if the item is something they’d be proud to show off.

    2. Invite Your Customers to Join Your Community

If you have a Facebook group or online community where they can interact with other buyers, pop the link to join on your thank you page!  This will work especially well if you are a brand with a passionate following or products that encourage user creativity or improvement.

  • You can’t compete with Amazon (And why that’s a good thing.)

November is here, which means the holidays aren’t far behind.

For some people, it feels like it’s too late in the year to reach the revenue goals you set for your product business.

I’ve been seeing people say things on Insta and Threads like:

    • I can’t compete with Amazon.
    • People are only paying attention to the election and then it’s going to be chaos depending on who wins.
    • No one is spending money on $28 candles when they can barely afford to go to the grocery store.

But there are still 56 days left in 2024 as of today.

And that’s still plenty of time to make more product sales.

    Because here’s what I believe:

🤓 No, you can’t compete with Amazon.  But that’s a good thing. Amazon doesn’t build relationships with its customers the same way you can on Instagram.  Amazon doesn’t take the time to beautifully gift wrap the item someone purchased and include a personalized thank you card from the person who created it.  You can’t compete with Jeff Bezos, so don’t even worry about it.  Stay in your lane, create amazing products, and delivery exceptional customer service.  {I love and recommend this book for all my product seller friends.)

🤪 Yes, people are paying attention to the election, and yes, things might be chaotic for a while.  But the holidays are still going to happen.  Think about it… has there ever been a year when people didn’t buy Christmas gifts?  Not that I can remember. So don’t stop marketing your products now.

😍 People will absolutely still buy your $28 candle (or whatever you’re selling that you think is “too expensive” for people to buy} even if bread costs eleventy billion dollars.  Christmas is happening regardless of what’s going in the world, which means gift buying will still be happening.  As a product seller, you’ll want to make sure that you are getting your products in front of as many people as possible this Christmas.  Facebook ads is one way to do that (but can be costly this time of year) and participating in in-person markets is another way to make more sales (though it requires a lot of your time).  My favorite way of course is starting an affiliate program so you can get other people sharing your products all across the internet this holiday season.

I know you have amazing products. Don’t let what’s going on in the world discourage you from marketing your business these last 2 months of 2024.

Cheers to more sales in 2024 (and also cheers to the election texts and calls ending today! 😂)

  • My Top Takeaways from Ultimate Product Party 2024

In May I headed to Orange County, California to attend the Ultimate Product Party, a 2-day business conference for product sellers. This was my third year to attend, and while it’s a conference geared towards physical product sellers, even as a service based business owner who works with product sellers, I had so many takeaways and aha’s from this event.

I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite moments and takeaways from the conference with you below.  While I won’t highlight all of the speakers and roundtable leaders, I do want to emphasize this: EVERY SINGLE PERSON was amazing. You can see the full list of speakers at ultimateproductparty.com – go follow them all on Instagram!

Okay, now let’s dive into a few of my top takeaways!

Tuesday evening before the event officially kicked off on Wednesday there was a pre-event cocktail party.  The venue location was AMAZING and the appetizers and drinks were tasty.

What was especially awesome was getting to connect with some of the attendees before the official first day.  I was able to meet one of my Affiliate Program Intensive students in person – Stacy from The Rad Mama Shop – which was fun.

I also connected with Erin from Product Powerhouse and her bestie Shaina who she runs Caffeine + Carbs with. The UPP hosts, Cat and Allison, were also there hugging and mingling and just being the best hosts and leaders ever.

Wednesday and Thursday at UPP were packed full of keynote speakers, roundtable sessions, and breakout sessions.

Here are some of my favorite takeaways from some of the speakers this year at Ultimate Product Party 2024:

“AI is your intern, not your CEO.”@duo.collective

Some other things I learned re: AI:  from Duo Collective:  ChatGPT is great for writing social captions.  When writing prompts, always use an action word.  Gemini (Google’s AI software) is great for more research based things and typically cites their sources.

“Consistency is critical when it comes to growing your business.” – Lucy Kelly @bloombybelmonili

Lucy is another client of mine who’s affiliate program I set up, and she is a marketing genius for product sellers and makers.

“Pin some of your top Instagram content to Pinterest.” – Mel Robbins @thelotco

This can be automated via Zapier and is something I’ll be implementing into my business this summer.

“People need to hear about something 25 times before they buy.” – Monica Little @monicalittlecoaching

This blew my mind because it used to be that it was only 7 times… but the world is moving faster than ever before so makes sense.  Monica also did a session on using Etsy ads – if you are a product seller on Etsy, be sure to follow her and check out her resources as what she shared could definitely help you make more sales on Etsy.

“We are here to be influential, not influencers.” – Lauren Nelson @iamlaurencnelson

“Make a list of 100 leads within your niche and spend time every day connecting with 20 of those leads on Instagram.” – Shannon + Ryan Matson @thesocialbungalow

I loved everything Shannon and Ryan had to share about how to connect with others on Instagram.  I think sometimes it can seem like others are just easily growing on the gram, so it was refreshing to hear them share something specific I can be doing weekly to grow.

“How would your day as a business owner look if you operated from a place of abundance?” – Mary Tappert @marytappertfinancialcoaching

This was a great journaling prompt shared by Mary during her session.  Definitely something I want to continue to think about and will make time to journal on soon. It’s so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of being a business owner sometimes, am I right?

One last thing I want to mention about UPP 2024 is that their hosts, Allison @allisoncartercelebrates and Cat @kittymeowboutique are two of my favorite business owners and mentors.  They genuinely care about every single person who attends UPP, and poured so much into making the event awesome for all of us {as did their amazing team.}  I’m so grateful to know them both and for their support of my business.

If you have the chance to attend a future Ultimate Product Party event, DO IT.   If you have the chance to work with Cat and/or Allison, DO IT.  I promise you will be so glad you did!

  • Behind-the-Scenes: Sharing My Top 3 Reels, Templates + Events

Today I thought it would be fun to give you a behind-the-scenes look into my business by sharing my “Top 3” in different areas of my business.

My Top 3 Reels on Instagram

Reel #1 – This reel was a trend I jumped on and I was convinced I was going viral… but then the views stopped. 😂

Reel #2 – I have a feeling using a Taylor Swift song on her album release day is why this reel got so many views. 😊

Reel #3 – Having a cute dog in your reel never hurts, imo. 🐩

Top 3 Events I’m Excited about in 2024

Event #1:  I’m beyond thrilled to attend and be speaking at the Product Powerhouse Summit! This summit is THE go-to summit for handmade makers, shop owners and any one who sells physical products. It’s 3 days dedicated to helping you build, grow, & thrive in your online product business.

Event #2:  I’m headed to Arizona on May 4th for a little exploring in Scottsdale before driving over to California to attend Ultimate Product Party.  This is such a fun and helpful conference for product sellers who want to learn how to scale!

Event #3: I really, really want to go to the Powerhouse Women event in August.  I’ll just be getting back from a cruise ten days before, so not sure it’s a great time for me to leave out of town again, but I am considering attending.  I plan to make a decision by June!  Are you going?

Top 3 Templates I Use Every Week

Template #1:  For my private affiliate management clients, I use this pitch template every single week when pitching potential affiliate partners for them.

Template #2: I’m working on a few sales pages for myself, and I constantly refer back to this sales page template from Launch In Style.

Template #3: Danielle Canty’s 100 Email Subject line list (also I just realized this isn’t a template, per se, but I do reference it every single week!).  Get on her email list here and sign up for it the next time she shares it.

  • How to Make More Product Sales This Month

I’d love to help you make more product sales this month, so I’m sharing with you a few tips and resources in this post that I hope will get you into action this month so you can increase your product sales!

Are you up for the challenge?  Keep reading!

📝 Draft 10 Pitches to Send Potential Affiliate Partners

I challenge you to research 10 potential affiliates this month and send them an email asking them to be your affiliate partner.

Some people you pitch might say no, but none of them can say YES if you don’t pitch them at all. 😊

If you need some support writing your pitches, I’ve got a template that will help you. You can scoop it up here for just $9.

I promise it’s going to make pitching your affiliates so much easier, so get to crafting those pitches asap!

    [affiliatable id=’261874′]

📅 When to Send Your Pitches to Potential Affiliates

Now, let’s talk about when to actually send your pitches to potential affiliates.

I am the affiliate manager for 4 nationwide brands here in the US, and one of the things I do for each of them every single week is pitch new affiliates on their behalf.  I use this same template when pitching – that’s how I know it works!

I recommend sending your pitches on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursdays only.

Why?  Because on Monday people are coming back to their desks and their inboxes are full from the weekend and they are thinking about everything they have to do that week.

On Fridays, people are busy thinking about the weekend and just trying to clear their inboxes and wrap up their work week as quickly as possible, so they may not take the time to read your pitch and give it their full consideration.

Tuesday – Thursdays, in my own experiencing of pitching 100’s of affiliates, is more ideal timing, and the days of the week my pitches are more likely to be well received.

🤓 What to do once a potential affiliate says YES

The #1 mistake I see people who have an affiliate program make is that they are just giving their affiliates an affiliate link and hoping they’ll share it with their communities.

As you might have heard me say before, hope is not a very good affiliate marketing strategy.

Instead of hoping your affiliates share about your offering with their audience once they say yes to partnering with you, you need to set your affiliates up for success.

    How do you do that?

💌 Create a welcome email sequence for your affiliates!

This welcome sequence is a series of emails you send your affiliates to make sure they have and can find everything they need to share about your products with their community.

    {Remember: The big key to success with affiliates is making it easy-peasy for them!}

Here’s three main reasons you need this welcome series:

1️⃣ Set the Tone: Introduce your brand, share your values, and align expectations right from the start. This sets the stage for a profitable affiliate partnership.

2️⃣ Equip your affiliates: In this welcome series, you want to provide your affiliate partners with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed. Share tips, tutorials, and promotional materials to jumpstart their efforts.

3️⃣ Build Relationships: Use this welcome email series as an opportunity to connect on a personal level. Show appreciation, offer support, and foster a sense of community within your affiliate program.

    🌟 Resource to Help You

To help you get your welcome emails for your affiliate program in place quickly so that your affiliates feel supported and part of a total win-win collaboration (one where you’re both making impact and money!), I’ve put together The Profitable Affiliate Program Template Bundle that will give you everything you need to set up your affiliate welcome sequence.

  • Why MRR (Master Resell Rights) is CRAP. ? (And what to do instead to make moolah online!) ?

Maybe you’ve seen the thousands of TikToks and Reels about MRR floating around online… (and if you haven’t, consider yourself lucky!)

MRR = Master Resell Rights, and basically it’s someone buying a “ready to sell course” for $X amount, then turning around and selling it for $X amount.

It’s kind of like a pyramid scheme… All you are doing is trying to sell this same course to other people so they can sell the same course to other people so they can… you get the point.

NO ONE actually uses the courses being sold {and that’s why no one will tell you the name of the course or what it helps you do}.  Doesn’t that feel a tad… scammy?

It’s get rich quick BS and in a few months you won’t hear anything about it because it’s not a sustainable way to make money long term.

If you are looking for a legit, long-term way to make money, I strongly urge you to consider affiliate marketing.

But not just posting our affiliate links and hoping someone buys.

Instead, become an affiliate for things you actually use and care about in your business.

With this strategy, you are making money in an ethical way, you aren’t scamming others, and you can feel good about what you are promoting!

I’d love to share with you the 3 strategies I use every month to earn extra income through promoting the things I am an affiliate for.

These are truly simple strategies that you can begin using today to earn extra income online.

Head over here to check out a little extra moolah. ?

Because there are legit ways to make extra income online that are sustainable.  MRR just isn’t one of them.

Thoughts on MRR?  Drop a comment under my post here.

  • Choosing the Right Affiliate Tracking Software for Your Business

Are you a course creator who has created an amazing course, but it’s just not selling like you hoped it would?

Or maybe you are a product seller with a Shopify store full of awesome digital or physical products, yet you can’t seem to get buyers to visit your site and make a purchase?

Good news: There is a cost-effective solution to each of these problems:

    Working with affiliate partners.

If you want to increase your course or product sales, you need to partner with affiliates, as it allows others to market your course or products for you in exchange for a commission.  By working with affiliates, you can tap into their existing networks, reach a wider audience faster than you can on your own, and increase your course sales quickly.

Before they can start promoting your courses and products, you’ve got to make sure your affiliate tracking software is in place!

One of the most common questions I get when people are thinking about starting their affiliate program is this:

“What affiliate tracking software should I use?”

My answer is to always check the tools you are already using first.

Many of the popular course platforms out there offer affiliate tracking capabilities, such as MemberVault, Kajabi, ThriveCart, Teachable, Kartra, Thinkific, and others.

If your course platform doesn’t offer affiliate tracking capabilities, there are a few tools I recommend:

    • GoAffPro – This is my favorite affiliate tracking tool for Shopify users.
    • AffiliateWP –  this is a wordpress plugin and so you will need to be using WordPress as your website or affiliate platform in order for it to work.
    • LeadDyno – If you have less than 3000 website visitors a month, LeadDyno is a great option for starting your affiliate program.
    • Refersion – integrates perfectly with Shopify, WooComemrce, and other platforms.
    • SendOwl – I use this platform for my own checkout features and they have awesome affiliate tracking capabilities.

Before you sign up for any affiliate tracking tool, I recommend you research the platform thoroughly, sit through a demo of it if one is available and ask any relevant questions to make sure you fully understand how it work.  What you don’t want to do is set up your affiliate tracking tool, onboard your affiliates, and then figure out you should’ve gone with a different tool. #eek
